Diamond View Farm Longhorns are 100% pasture-raised and thrive on a grass-fed diet from our pastures and locally grown hay. Our farm-raised beef is grain-finished for the last 4-6 weeks so you get the most impact for your dollar.

Texas Longhorns can transform around six pounds of grass into one pound of muscle while remaining very lean, yet tender. In fact, we frequently find that our ground beef doesn’t need drained after cooking due to the very low fat content of our Longhorn meat.

Frequently Asked Questions

What Is the Hanging Weight?

Longhorn bulls can weigh between 1500 and 2200 pounds, with steers weighing up to 2500 lbs. However, the animal’s live weight it not the hanging weight.

Hanging weight is generally around 35 – 40% of the live weight, and doesn’t include the blood, heart, lungs, head, hooves, hide, or other internal organs. Thus, the hanging weight of cattle includes mainly the bones and meat.

All of these numbers are estimates. Actual figures will vary for each animal.

What Is the Take-Home Weight?

The take-home weight (also referred to as “final weight”) is the weight of your total meat package in Columbus, OH. The take-home weight is generally around 60% to 65% of the hanging weight (or 21 – 26% of the live weight), and doesn’t include water weight lost during curing (carcass hanging that lasts around two weeks), and weight lost during the cutting process (including fat, or bone loss depending on your cut requests).

For the Longhorns at Diamond View Farms outside of Columbus, Ohio, there is a smaller difference in hanging weight and take-home weight than most other cattle. This is because Longhorns are generally more lean than other breads, and our cattle are 100% pasture-raised and mostly grass-fed.

All of these numbers are estimates. Actual figures will vary for each animal.
